Omoyele Sowore steps down as AAC National Chairman after emerging party’s 2027 presidential candidate, sparking mixed reactions online

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has stepped down as National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) after emerging as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The development marks a significant leadership shift within the AAC ahead of the next electoral cycle, as the party positions itself for the presidential race.

Sowore, who previously contested the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, was confirmed as the party’s consensus candidate, prompting his resignation from the chairmanship position in line with internal arrangements.

The announcement has since triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms, with supporters and critics expressing contrasting views about the decision and the party’s political strength.

While some supporters described the move as a sign of internal democracy and political maturity, others questioned the party’s national reach and electoral viability ahead of 2027.

Online reactions reflected a wide range of opinions, with some users praising Sowore for stepping aside to allow new leadership within the party structure.

Others, however, dismissed the development as symbolic, arguing that the AAC remains limited in national political influence.

The African Action Congress, founded by Sowore, has consistently positioned itself as a reform-driven political platform advocating governance reforms and anti-corruption policies.

Sowore is yet to formally unveil his detailed campaign strategy for the 2027 presidential election, though political observers expect heightened activity as the election season approaches.

The party is expected to make further announcements regarding its leadership transition and campaign structure in the coming months.
