Chief Julius Bokoru, Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, challenged the growing reports linking Sylva to an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, urging journalists and the public to distinguish allegations from established facts.
Bokoru, in a statement, said the pattern and sequencing of reports about the matter had raised questions about the sources and methods behind some of the information being published.

The aide stressed that his intervention was not an attempt to undermine investigative journalism, which he described as an important part of democratic accountability.
“Nigerian journalism has, at its best, played a courageous and indispensable role in holding governments, institutions and powerful individuals to account,” Bokoru said.
He nevertheless argued that responsible reporting should also involve scrutiny of the origins, authenticity and context of sensitive materials before publication.
According to Bokoru, allegations involving Sylva had been repeatedly circulated in ways that could create the impression that the claims had already been proven.
“The allegations have been repeatedly serialised, repackaged and amplified in a manner that increasingly gives the impression of a deliberate campaign to cement a particular narrative in the public mind,” he said.
The controversy surrounding Sylva has developed into a wider legal and political matter.
In April, the Federal Government filed a 13-count charge against six defendants over an alleged plot to overthrow President Tinubu.
Sylva was named in the charge but was not among those arraigned at the time.
The defendants pleaded not guilty.
A prosecution witness subsequently gave evidence in April alleging links between some of the defendants and Sylva.
The allegations remain matters for determination through the judicial process.
The matter has also produced separate proceedings involving five people accused by the Department of State Services of concealing Sylva’s whereabouts.
The defendants pleaded not guilty and were granted bail, while the case was later adjourned until October 5, 2026.
Bokoru questioned why sensitive investigative materials were appearing in what he described as carefully sequenced reports.
“Where are these materials coming from? Who is supplying them? Why are sensitive investigative documents appearing in carefully sequenced instalments?” he asked.
He was careful, however, not to accuse any media organisation of being sponsored by a political or other interest, saying he had no evidence to support such a claim.
Bokoru instead urged media organisations to examine whether they were independently investigating the allegations or inadvertently amplifying information supplied by interested parties.
His central argument was that repetition should not be allowed to replace proof.
“There is also a fundamental distinction that should never be blurred: an allegation is not evidence; an investigator’s theory is not a conviction; and a statement contained in an investigative file is not a judicial finding of guilt,” he said.
The position echoes an earlier defence of Sylva by Bokoru in October 2025, when he dismissed reports linking the former Bayelsa governor to an alleged coup plot as politically motivated.
Since then, however, the allegations have moved beyond media reports into formal legal proceedings, making the distinction between accusation and judicial determination particularly significant.
A Federal High Court in Abuja also ordered the interim forfeiture of nine properties linked to Sylva in May, following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The order was separate from the criminal proceedings surrounding the alleged coup.
Bokoru maintained that Sylva should be subjected to due process rather than trial by public opinion.
“If there are allegations, report them as allegations,” he said. “If the evidence is solid, publish it.”
He called for an independent and fearless press, arguing that media organisations should scrutinise evidence while remaining transparent about the nature and source of leaked information.
“Nigeria deserves a fearless press. But a fearless press must also be an independent press,” Bokoru said.
The ongoing court proceedings are expected to provide a formal setting for the allegations against the defendants to be tested.

Until the relevant cases are determined, claims linking Sylva to the alleged coup remain allegations rather than established findings of guilt.
