Ted Lieu raises explosive epstein file allegations against trump

Congressman says files contain disturbing allegations involving Trump, but evidence remains disputed

US Congressman Ted Lieu raised explosive allegations about President Donald Trump and the Jeffrey Epstein files in Washington on February 3, 2026, saying the documents contained what he described as “highly disturbing allegations” that Trump raped children and threatened to kill them.

Lieu, a Democratic representative from California, made the remarks at a news conference while criticising Republican efforts to focus attention on former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the wider Epstein investigation. C-SPAN recorded the remarks. (YouTube)

“So why are Republicans so interested in Bill and Hillary Clinton?” Lieu asked before claiming that Trump appeared in the Epstein files “thousands and thousands of times”.

“In those files, there’s highly disturbing allegations of Donald Trump raping children, of Donald Trump threatening to kill children. So I encourage the press to go look at these allegations,” he said. (YouTube)

Lieu’s comments have since generated intense political and online attention, but the wording matters.

The congressman did not say that the files prove Trump raped children, nor did he say that previously unreleased documents contained video or other direct evidence showing such acts.

Fact-checkers found that viral versions of his remarks significantly strengthened his original statement by turning allegations into an assertion of established fact. (Lead Stories)

That distinction is important because the US Justice Department has repeatedly warned that material in the Epstein collection can include unverified or false submissions made to the FBI.

In its January 30, 2026 release of more than 3 million additional pages, the Justice Department said the material included documents, images and other information supplied by members of the public.

The department specifically cautioned that some material contained “untrue and sensationalist claims” about Trump and said those particular claims were unfounded and false. (Department of Justice)

The department’s disclosure followed the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which required the publication of responsive records while allowing protections for victims and other sensitive information.

The DOJ said its January release brought the total amount of material published under the process to nearly 3.5 million pages, alongside more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. (Department of Justice)

The controversy did not end with the initial release.

On February 25, Lieu and fellow Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman asked Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to appoint a special counsel to investigate Attorney General Pam Bondi over statements she made during congressional testimony about the Epstein material.

Lieu’s office said the request followed reports that some Trump-related Epstein documents had been removed from the public database. (Congressman Ted Lieu)

In a February 20 letter to Blanche, Lieu and Goldman pointed to FBI interview material they said contained references to allegations involving Trump and Epstein.

The lawmakers argued that such material contradicted Bondi’s congressional statement that there was no evidence Trump had committed a crime. (Congressman Ted Lieu)

The Justice Department, however, has maintained that its review and publication process is designed to protect victims while complying with the transparency law.

The department’s handling of the files is itself under scrutiny.

In April, the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General announced an audit examining how the department identified, reviewed, redacted and released Epstein-related records under the transparency legislation. (DOJ Office of Inspector General)

The political stakes are unusually high because Epstein’s social connections included numerous prominent figures, while the release of his records has fuelled demands for greater transparency from both sides of the political divide.

Trump has denied wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. Being named in Epstein-related documents, correspondence or other records does not, by itself, establish that a person committed a crime.

That distinction has become central to the debate surrounding Lieu’s comments.

The most accurate description of the controversy, therefore, is that Ted Lieu Epstein allegations refer to the California congressman’s assertion that Epstein-related records contain serious allegations concerning Trump, rather than a proven finding that Trump committed the alleged offences.

The controversy nevertheless represents another politically charged chapter in the continuing battle over the Epstein files, with lawmakers demanding transparency, the Justice Department defending its handling of the records and fact-checkers warning against presenting unverified allegations as established facts.

For the public, the question remains less about the political rhetoric surrounding the files and more about what the underlying evidence actually demonstrates.

Until individual allegations are independently substantiated, they should remain described as allegations rather than established criminal conduct.
