Tinubu blasts opposition over electoral act misrepresentation at APC convention

President Bola Tinubu defends the Electoral Act, rebuffing opposition attacks while reaffirming democratic reforms and governance priorities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday accused opposition parties of deliberately misrepresenting the Electoral Act 2026 for political gain, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and credible elections.

The remarks were delivered at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress at Eagle Square, Abuja.

“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that the Act emerged from a rigorous legislative process, including public participation and scrutiny by the National Assembly.

The President argued that claims portraying the law as anti-democratic overlooked procedural safeguards and risked undermining public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

“The Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule,” he added.

Rejecting fears of a one-party state, Tinubu emphasised the importance of opposition in a healthy democracy. “Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition.

As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies,” he said.

The President also cautioned APC members against internal divisions, noting that political parties often collapse due to ego and ambition rather than electoral defeat.

He urged unity, discipline, and shared values, describing these as the party’s greatest asset.

Tinubu took the occasion to defend his administration’s economic reforms, highlighting improvements in inflation, business confidence, and trade surpluses.

“We are moving from survival mode to stability and steadily towards an era of prosperity,” he said, pointing to enhanced investor confidence and Nigeria’s exit from the FATF grey list.

Earlier, APC National Convention Coordinating Committee Chairman Aminu Masari, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma-led Progressive Governors Forum praised Tinubu’s reforms and leadership.

Masari described the convention as a historic moment to renew party commitments, while Edun highlighted policies driving economic growth and poverty reduction.

Uzodinma stressed the importance of long-term planning and alignment with the federal government’s agenda. “Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the direction is clearer.

The reform logic is stronger. And the prospects for long-term growth and development are brighter,” he said, noting the APC’s need to remain inclusive, disciplined, and visionary.
