Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone Africa, Tiwa Savage explained that her creative inspiration comes from a wide range of sources, including peers within the Afrobeats industry, global R&B sounds, and jazz music, which she also listens to regularly.
The singer named American R&B star Brandy and jazz as part of her artistic influence, while emphasising that her ultimate source of inspiration is spiritual.
“I am inspired by so many people. Musically, I am inspired by Brandy… I also listen to jazz… I am inspired by my peers,” she said, highlighting a diverse creative palette.
“You know, Wiz, Burna, David. You know, everybody. I am inspired by so many people but I look up to God,” she added.
Her remarks come in contrast to previous comments she made regarding the widely used “Big 3” label in Afrobeats, often used to describe Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigeria’s leading global exports.
At the time, Tiwa Savage argued that the framing can overlook other influential artistes, particularly female performers in the industry.
She has previously noted that structural factors, including promotion and access to resources, also shape visibility in music.
She further stressed that discussions around top artistes should be more inclusive, pointing out that singer Tems also deserves recognition in global conversations about Afrobeats success.
