Todd Boehly, American investor and co-owner of Chelsea Football Club, has stepped down as chairman after selling his stake to majority owner Clearlake Capital in a deal valued at close to £1bn, marking a significant shift in the club’s ownership structure.

The transaction sees Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, assume full control of the Premier League club, consolidating a position it has held since the consortium’s £2.3bn acquisition from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Todd Boehly exits Chelsea chairman at a time when the club is navigating both on-pitch ambitions and long-term structural planning, including stadium redevelopment and squad investment strategies.

In a statement confirming his departure, Boehly described his tenure as a privilege and expressed confidence in the club’s future.

“It has been an honour to serve as Chelsea chairman. I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership,” Boehly said.

The deal also involved the exit of fellow stakeholder Mark Walter, while Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss remains connected to the ownership group as a strategic partner.

Sources familiar with the agreement estimate Chelsea’s overall valuation at approximately £5bn, underlining the club’s sustained commercial strength despite fluctuating league performances.

Clearlake Capital acknowledged Boehly’s contribution to the club’s transition era, particularly during a period marked by aggressive player recruitment and a long-term youth-focused strategy.

“He will always be part of the Chelsea story and family,” Eghbali and Feliciano said, reinforcing a tone of continuity rather than disruption.

Club officials were quick to emphasise that the ownership reshuffle would not affect daily operations.

A formal statement confirmed there would be no changes to leadership structure, football strategy or administrative direction, a reassurance aimed at maintaining confidence among supporters and stakeholders.

The development follows internal tensions within the ownership group that became apparent in 2024, when differing visions for the club’s future reportedly led to discussions about a potential buyout.

Those discussions have now culminated in a decisive resolution that places full authority in Clearlake’s hands.

Since the 2022 takeover, Chelsea have experienced mixed fortunes on the pitch.

The club’s most notable success came during the 2024 to 2025 season, when a fourth-place Premier League finish was complemented by victories in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, a 10th-place finish in the most recent campaign highlighted ongoing inconsistencies.

Off the pitch, the ownership era has been defined by heavy investment in young talent and long-term contracts, a strategy that has drawn both praise and scrutiny.

Plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge or explore relocation options have also contributed to internal debates within the hierarchy.

The exit of Boehly signals the end of a defining chapter in Chelsea’s recent history, but it also presents a moment of clarity for the club’s direction.

With Clearlake Capital now firmly in control, attention is expected to shift toward delivering sustained performance, financial stability and a clear long-term vision.

As the dust settles on this high-profile transition, the focus within Stamford Bridge remains on progress both on and off the pitch, with supporters hopeful that the latest ownership consolidation will provide the stability needed for future success.
