Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to planned military strikes on Iranian power plants, citing “very good and productive conversations” with Iranian officials aimed at resolving tensions in the Middle East.

In a post on his TruthSocial account, Trump said discussions held over the past two days were “in depth, detailed, and constructive.”
He added that he had directed the United States Department of War to suspend any military action for five days pending the outcome of ongoing talks.
The move follows a recent 48-hour ultimatum issued by Trump, demanding that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on its energy infrastructure.
The waterway remains a critical global shipping route and a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions.
However, Iranian officials appeared to dispute the claim of engagement. Reports from Fars News Agency quoted an unnamed source stating that there had been “no direct or indirect contact” with Trump, suggesting the US had stepped back from its earlier threats.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces signalled that fighting against Iranian-backed groups in Lebanon could continue for several more weeks, underlining the fragile security situation across the region.
Financial markets reacted swiftly to the development. Brent crude prices fell sharply by 13 per cent to around $96 per barrel, while UK gas prices dropped significantly.
The FTSE 100 recovered modestly, rising by 0.5 per cent after earlier losses, and UK government bond yields declined.
Global leaders have continued to monitor the situation closely. Keir Starmer reportedly spoke with Trump, stressing the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to restore global shipping flows.
Trump, who is currently in Florida, is expected to travel to Memphis for a domestic policy speech.

However, international focus remains firmly on the Middle East, where the pause in military action offers a cautious opening for diplomacy amid ongoing uncertainty.
