Mr. Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), disclosed this development on Tuesday via a post on his official page, following a productive meeting between NNPCL officials and the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Mr. Chris Wright.
According to Mr. Soneye, the collaborative efforts are strategically aimed at expanding sustainable access to electricity for more Nigerian households, businesses, and institutions, ultimately serving as a catalyst for significant economic growth and overall development within the nation.
Persecondnews recalls that in October, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, highlighted that the U.S.-Nigeria clean energy partnership is poised to optimize mutual opportunities for both countries and potential investors within the energy sector.
During the two-day U.S.-Nigeria Strategic Energy Security Dialogue held in Washington D.C., Minister Ekpo underscored Nigeria’s firm commitment to strategically leveraging its extensive gas resources for both economic advancement and a smooth energy transition through the “Decade of Gas” initiative.
Under this significant initiative, the United States will provide crucial technical assistance to support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in effectively reducing methane emissions originating from its oil and gas sector.
This collaborative aspect strongly emphasizes the shared commitment of both nations to actively address the pressing challenges of climate change and to promote sustainable energy practices across the board.
Furthermore, Nigeria and the United States have jointly launched the Clean Energy Alliance of Nigeria (CLEAN), a pivotal initiative designed to actively promote clean energy investments within Nigeria.
“The partnership aims to provide more Nigerian homes, businesses, and institutions with sustainable access to electricity, driving economic growth and development,” stated Mr. Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPCL.
This alliance will play a crucial role in driving the widespread adoption of clean energy technologies throughout the country and in gradually reducing Nigeria’s reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
To further solidify this partnership, the U.S. has committed over $1.3 million in dedicated funding for clean energy technical support to key Nigerian partners.
This financial commitment will empower Nigerian institutions to develop the necessary skills and expertise required to effectively drive the nation’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
The robust partnership between the United States and Nigeria underscores the strong and enduring ties between the two nations, building upon a foundation of previous agreements and successful joint initiatives.
Both countries share a long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship, with the United States currently standing as the largest foreign investor in Nigeria, with significant investments concentrated primarily in the petroleum mining and wholesale trade sectors.
