Uchenna Kanu WAFCON omission leaves Super Falcons striker disappointed after recovering from injury ahead of 2024 tournament.

Super Falcons striker Uchenna Kanu has expressed disappointment at being excluded from Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where the team secured a record-extending 10th continental title.

Kanu, 28, who played for Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, missed out on the squad despite recovering from a six-month injury ahead of the tournament. The striker, currently in Nigeria, told Nigeria Info she received little communication from coach Justine Madugu regarding her omission.

“There hasn’t been any conversation with me from anyone. I actually started my visa, and a few days to the travel date, I got a text message from the coach saying, for whatever reasons, I was no longer a part of the team,” Kanu said. “I felt bad, I was sad. I thought I was going to be part of the team.”

Since returning from injury in March, Kanu has featured in seven matches for Racing Louisville in the NWSL, scoring once. She is reportedly out of contract with the club but aims to return to the national team ahead of the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.

“My teammates did well and I supported them the entire time. I have reached out to congratulate them and the coach. Hopefully I’ll be back on the team,” she added.

Kanu launched her memoir, Football, My Escape, in Lagos on Tuesday.

The striker made her national team debut in 2019 after excelling at Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 levels and has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for the Super Falcons.
