British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has urged the country to use the 2027 general elections as an opportunity to demonstrate how a strong democracy should operate in a large and diverse nation.

Vowles made the call on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s national headquarters in Abuja, where he met with INEC officials to familiarise himself with the commission’s operations and preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The envoy, who said he had been in Nigeria for eight weeks, highlighted the importance of the country’s democratic process to its citizens, the West African region and the international community.

He described the 2027 elections as an important opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate democratic leadership and strengthen confidence in its electoral system.

Vowles said Nigeria’s democracy mattered not only to its estimated 240 million citizens but also to regional stability and global democratic development.

He explained that his visit was intended to recognise the significance of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and gain a better understanding of preparations for the elections.

Speaking during the meeting, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, assured the international community that the commission would conduct credible and inclusive elections in 2027.

Amupitan said restoring public confidence, improving operational efficiency and protecting the integrity of every ballot remained central priorities of his administration.

He acknowledged the United Kingdom’s longstanding support through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and other development partners, calling for stronger cooperation as the elections approach.

The INEC chairman identified election cybersecurity, specialised training for commission personnel and joint efforts to combat artificial intelligence-driven manipulation, disinformation and foreign information manipulation and interference as priority areas for collaboration.

He maintained that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy was essential not only to its citizens but also to peace, stability and economic growth across West Africa and the African continent.

Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s independence and impartiality, promising that it would work towards delivering elections that meet international standards.

To encourage greater voter participation, he disclosed that INEC had launched an intensive Permanent Voter Card collection campaign across all 774 local government areas, extending the exercise to ward registration levels.

He also highlighted measures to protect candidate nominations under Section 29 of the Electoral Act 2026 through the INEC Candidates Nomination Portal.

The engagement forms part of preparations for the 2027 general elections, with electoral credibility, public trust, technological security and international cooperation emerging as key issues.
