Gunmen abducted a son-in-law of a popular Jigawa government contractor, Haruna Maifata, and killed two police officers in Taura council, according to the Jigawa State Police Command.
The event happened in Kwalam, one of Taura’s most populous towns, where the contractor resides.
The kidnappers kidnapped Ma’aru Abubakar, the contractor’s son-in-law.
Jigawa Police spokesperson, Lawan Adam, confirmed the incident to reporters, saying that efforts are being stepped up to apprehend fleeing offenders.
He identified the deceased officers as Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Anas Usaini, a superintendent of police and Sunusi Alhassan, an inspector.
He said the officers were shot dead close to an improvised patrol vehicle, which was set ablaze by the gunmen.
Residents said the gunmen invaded their prime target’s residence after attacking security formation and went into the town unchallenged.
They said the latest incident occurred less than three months after one Kabiru Taura, a businessman, was also kidnapped and freed after he reportedly paid over N20 million ransom.
Residents fear that the security situation might deteriorate in Jigawa State, a relatively peaceful state in the Northwest region, if the needed action is not put in place.
