Unicem hospital collapses in Calabar after landslide triggered by heavy rain (VIDEO)

A building at Unicem Hospital in Big Qua Town, Calabar, Cross River State, reportedly collapsed on Thursday, 13 August 2026, after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide and soil erosion that weakened the ground around its foundations.

Footage circulating on social media shows the damaged structure and surrounding earth after the incident.

A Calabar-based pharmacist was among the early social media users to share footage of the incident, attributing the collapse to the landslide and soil erosion.

The same footage was subsequently shared by other Nigerian social media accounts, bringing wider attention to the incident.

The available footage and accounts indicate that the immediate concern is the structural damage.

However, details about the extent of the damage, the particular section of the hospital affected and whether the building was occupied at the time remain limited.

There have also been no confirmed widespread reports of casualties specifically connected to the hospital collapse in the sources reviewed for this report.

Unicem Hospital is a documented healthcare facility in Big Qua Town, Calabar. A local directory lists the hospital on Duke Town Drive, while a 2016 healthcare training report also identified UNICEM Hospital among medical facilities in Calabar.

The incident comes against a difficult environmental backdrop for Calabar, where heavy rainfall has repeatedly exposed communities to flooding, soil erosion and landslides.

In July 2026, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu visited communities affected by a major flood and landslide disaster in Calabar.

The affected areas included Big Qua Town, Ikot Awatim, Ikot Ansa, Calabar South, Mbukpa, Ibom Layout and 8 Miles.

At least five people were reported killed in that disaster, including four children from one family and a tanker driver identified as Udo.

During that visit, Otu described the scale of the destruction and loss of life as deeply distressing and pledged measures aimed at reducing the risk of similar disasters.

“As a government, we remain committed to taking decisive and proactive measures to reduce the risk of such disasters,” Otu said, according to reports from his July visit.

The latest incident therefore adds to growing concerns about the vulnerability of infrastructure in parts of the city during the rainy season.

Calabar receives substantial rainfall during its wet season, and poor drainage, flooding and erosion can combine to undermine already vulnerable ground.

Background reporting on the city has linked its heavy rainfall and drainage challenges with flooding, gully erosion and landslides.

For buildings located close to slopes or areas experiencing progressive soil washout, the danger is not necessarily limited to the intensity of a single downpour.

Repeated rainfall can gradually remove supporting soil, increasing the risk of foundation instability.

That makes the Unicem Hospital collapse particularly significant beyond the immediate damage.

Hospitals and other health facilities require dependable infrastructure because any structural failure can disrupt medical services while also creating risks for patients, staff and visitors.

At present, however, it would be premature to assign responsibility for the collapse without an engineering assessment.

The circulating footage indicates erosion and ground failure around the affected structure, but an official investigation would be needed to establish whether drainage, foundation design, construction quality, site conditions or a combination of factors contributed to the failure.

Authorities and hospital management have yet to provide a detailed public account of the incident in the sources reviewed.

The Unicem Hospital collapse has nevertheless provided another stark reminder of the pressure that extreme rainfall and erosion can place on Calabar’s infrastructure.

With the rainy season continuing, attention is likely to turn towards the safety of other buildings and facilities in similarly exposed parts of the city.
