Victor Udoh dies at 21 in Abuja as former Southampton and Royal Antwerp clubs mourn the young Nigerian striker

Former Southampton FC and Royal Antwerp FC forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21 in Abuja under circumstances described in reports as suspicious.

According to reports by The Mirror UK, the young Nigerian striker was found dead in Abuja, although authorities had yet to officially confirm the exact cause of death as of Tuesday.

Victor Udoh dies just months after returning to Nigeria following the end of his spell with Czech club Dynamo Ceske Budejovice, which he joined after leaving Southampton in 2025.

Royal Antwerp confirmed the tragic development in a statement shared on its official X account.

“With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh (21),” the Belgian club stated.

The club recalled Udoh’s impressive rise during the 2023/2024 season, when he scored 12 goals in 21 appearances for the Young Reds before making his senior debut against Charleroi.

“In total, Victor appeared officially 28 times for The Great Old and provided two assists, before making the move to Southampton,” the statement added.

“Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time. Rest in peace, Victor.”

Victor Udoh dies after what many football observers had described as a promising early European career that began after his move from Abuja-based academy Hypebuzz to Royal Antwerp.

The striker later signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Southampton but did not make a senior appearance for the English club before leaving by mutual consent in search of regular playing opportunities.

Former Watford midfielder and Udoh’s ex-teammate, Pierre Dwomoh, reacted emotionally to the news on Instagram.

“At first you think something like this happens in your sleep, until you read the message thoroughly and realise: this is real,” Dwomoh wrote.

“Some of Victor’s relatives I spoke to confirmed his death.”

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released further details surrounding the circumstances of Udoh’s death.

Tributes have continued to pour in from members of the football community, with many describing the late striker as a gifted and ambitious young talent whose career showed enormous promise.
