The university’s female football and volleyball teams secured their spots after finishing among the top three at the 27th Nigeria University Games held in Jos between November 6 and 16, 2025.
The institution competed in eight sports, including taekwondo, karate, female football, volleyball, male football, tennis, rowing and athletics.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the university as it seeks to expand its sporting reputation internationally.
Welcoming the athletes back to campus, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, praised them as worthy ambassadors whose success would further elevate Unizik on the global sports map.
He assured the teams of continued support, especially in talent development and high-performance training.
Among the standout performers was 19-year-old Mary Ogisi, who won silver in taekwondo and bronze in karate.
She revealed that her journey into combat sports began as a way to defend herself after experiencing bullying during childhood.
Her courage and determination added an inspiring emotional layer to the university’s overall performance.
Match Commissioner and media officer, Dr Ikenna Nwokedi, commended the athletes for maintaining strong form, noting that they upheld their status as champions from the South-East zone.
His remarks echoed widespread admiration for the team’s grit and discipline.
The Director of Sports, Mrs Tonia Chukwudi, highlighted the resilience shown by the contingent despite facing several challenges in Jos, including cold weather, long travel from Anambra, injuries, venue changes and concerns around insecurity.
She assessed their performance as “95 per cent,” adding that although Unizik did not clinch the overall trophy, it remained one of Nigeria’s strongest and most competitive university teams.
With Unizik Triumphs now etched into the university’s sporting narrative, anticipation is already building ahead of the 2026 World University Games.
