Viral video raises alarming doubts over fake Peak Milk

thenacre-campaign

On 19 October 2026, a social media user known as Dj SpoiltKid shared a video from Nigeria in which two sachets of Peak Milk were held side by side for comparison, drawing renewed attention to the long-standing problem of Fake Peak Milk. The clip showed clear differences in print darkness, powder texture and the placement of batch and expiry details.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had already issued formal alerts on the same issues, while FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, the maker of the genuine product, has consistently advised buyers to verify official markings.

In the video the presenter noted that one sachet carried darker printing and contained a grainier substance, with the batch number printed outside the dark blue strip.

The second sachet, described as an older pack still in use, had lighter printing and a fine, free-flowing powder, with the batch number and expiry date imprinted inside the blue area.

The recording ended with the direct question of which version was original and which was not. Such side-by-side examinations have become common as consumers try to protect household stocks.

NAFDAC’s Public Alert No. 026/2023, issued after joint work with the company’s security team, listed almost identical markers.

Genuine 14g sachets were described as creamy yellowish and free-flowing, while counterfeits tended to be cream-white and chalky.

The alert also flagged differences in MANCAP numbers, print style and coding consistency.

In January 2025 NAFDAC sealed more than 240 makeshift factories at Cemetery Market in Aba and seized goods valued at over ₦5 billion, including counterfeit Peak sachets produced with cloned packaging under unhygienic conditions.

In the 2023 alert NAFDAC stated: “NAFDAC implores distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid consumption, sale or distribution of the counterfeit product.” The agency instructed its zonal teams to mop up remaining stocks and urged anyone holding suspect material to submit it to the nearest office.

Adverse reactions after consumption should be reported to a qualified health professional and to NAFDAC’s pharmacovigilance channels.

FrieslandCampina WAMCO has previously responded to similar videos by condemning counterfeiters.

In one statement the company said it condemns in the strongest terms the criminal actions of those producing lookalikes and advised customers always to check for the NAFDAC registration number and guarantee stamp. Authentic Peak Milk remains certified by both NAFDAC and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.

The latest video does not constitute laboratory proof, yet the features it highlights align closely with those already documented by regulators.

Packaging designs can change over time, and camera lighting can alter perceived colour, so not every darker print is automatically counterfeit. Nevertheless, the combination of grainier texture and batch details placed outside the blue strip matches descriptions of products previously identified as Fake Peak Milk.

Counterfeit dairy sachets form part of a wider challenge in Nigeria’s food market.

High demand, relatively low production costs for illicit copies and the difficulty of policing open markets have allowed the problem to persist despite repeated enforcement actions.

Families that rely on small sachets for daily use or for children remain particularly exposed to products of unknown composition.

Consumers are still advised to buy from established retailers, inspect the blue strip carefully, and report any pack that appears inconsistent with the characteristics published by NAFDAC.

The agency’s consumer lines remain open for such reports, and the company continues to operate its own care channels for verification queries.
