Wasiu Ayinde Awujale of Ijebu

Wasiu Ayinde Awujale of Ijebu? Here are reasons why K1 De Ultimate, Fuji music king, may succeed late Oba Adetona as monarch of the Ijebu Kingdom

Wasiu Ayinde Awujale of Ijebu? It may sound unusual, but the Fuji music king, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, is strongly being mentioned as a possible successor to the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ọgbagba Agbotewole II, who reigned from April 1960 until July 2025.

Born Wasiu Ayinde Adewale Olasunkanmi Omogbolahan Anifowoshe on March 3, 1957, the celebrated musician belongs to the Fidipote Ruling Family one of the four recognized ruling houses in the Ijebu Kingdom.

His deep cultural roots, combined with national influence, have placed him at the center of succession conversations.

Why K1 May Become the Next Awujale

  1. Strong connections and resources -Modern Yoruba monarchies often favor candidates with influence and wealth. K1 commands both, with ties that cut across politics, culture, and business.

  2. Closeness to power -The Fuji maestro is a well-known ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while the ruling APC also controls Ogun State under Governor Dapo Abiodun, who has a say in endorsing the new monarch.

  3. Rotational ruling houses- Though the Fusengbuwa Ruling House is technically due to produce the next Awujale, insiders believe the Fidipote lineage, through K1, could prevail if succession battles intensify.

  4. Historical precedent of ‘unusualness – Past Awujales have emerged under exceptional circumstances. Late Oba Adetona himself was recalled from the UK by national leaders. K1, with his unique profile, could also fit into such an “unusual” royal selection.

  5. Cultural appeal and esoteric symbolism– As an “Atobatele” (royal-born), K1 has the stature to stand among ranking Yoruba monarchs.

Many also believe his charisma could elevate cultural events like the Ojude Oba festival to greater prominence.

  1. Grassroots investment and popularity – Beyond his music, K1 has invested heavily in Ijebu, winning admiration at the grassroots level. His street-smart persona adds to his political and cultural strength.

  2. A compelling historical narrative– For historians, writers, and cultural commentators, the idea of a global Fuji star ascending to royalty is as intriguing as it is symbolic, making K1’s potential kingship a “story made for history.”

From Music Icon to Monarch?

K1’s journey from Lagos Island to global stardom is already legendary. Starting music at age 8, he rose through competitions, joined Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s band, and released chart-defining albums like Talazo ’84.

Over the decades, he has garnered titles, awards, and international acclaim.

Now, whispers in Ijebu land suggest his divine grace and resilience may push him from the Fuji stage to the royal throne.

If it happens, history would record one of Nigeria’s most extraordinary transitions—from global music superstar to custodian of one of Yorubaland’s most prestigious thrones.
