In a significant development, the Nigerian Federal Government has granted Ogun State’s request to take control of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway for reconstruction. This announcement was made by the Minister for Works, Senator David Umahi in Abuja after the Federal Executive Council meeting.

While this decision has been met with some optimism, concerns and apprehensions loom large among the populace, fearing the repercussions of substandard work and potential mismanagement of the vital transportation artery.

The Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway, a crucial road that connects major urban centers and serves as a lifeline for the movement of goods and people, has been plagued by issues such as poor road conditions, traffic congestion, and accidents. Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration in Ogun State initiated the request for control of the road, aiming to improve its condition and overall infrastructure.

While the move is seen as a step toward more localized and efficient control of road maintenance, there is a palpable fear among residents and commuters that the road’s handover might result in substandard reconstruction and maintenance. These concerns are rooted in previous experiences where road projects fell short of expectations and failed to meet international quality standards.

Local residents and commuters expressed their trepidations regarding the decision. Mr. Akinwale, a frequent user of the road, stated, “We’ve seen this happen before, where promises of better roads are made, but the work done is often subpar. We need assurance that this time it will be different.”

Speaking on transparency and accountability in the project’s execution, Mr. Bolaji Adeolu stated that the state government under Dapo Abiodun leadership has not been known to be accountable and transparent with public funds “I don’t know how the people will know how much of tax payers money will go into this projects. The governor has not been transparent enough in his financial dealings over the years as nobody have ideas of the cost and financial value of a single road construction within the state. Recently the BudgetIt indicates in its recently released Fiscal Transparency report that Ogun State ranked 34th among the 36 states and FCT. The state’s public procurement system has always been shrouded in secrecy and no or little public information is available for the citizens on how the state money is being spent”

They are calling for a robust oversight mechanism to ensure that the quality of the road reconstruction meets international standards and that the project remains free from mismanagement.

On the other hand, the state government have reassured the public that strict monitoring, adherence to standards, and transparent reporting will be integral to the reconstruction project. They have emphasized their commitment to ensuring that the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway project not only proceeds efficiently but also results in a well-constructed and maintained roadway that benefits all users.

The fears and concerns regarding the ceding of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway to Ogun State government underscore the importance of vigilant public scrutiny and active engagement in ensuring that the project proceeds smoothly and that the quality of work is of the highest standard. The success of this endeavor will depend on the collaboration between the state and federal authorities, as well as the active involvement of concerned citizens who are committed to holding the responsible parties accountable for the road’s reconstruction.
