In a swift response to a disturbing incident, the Rivers State Police Command has announced that three of its officers involved in the kidnapping and extortion of $3,000 from two individuals will undergo disciplinary measures, including an orderly room trial and official queries. The announcement was made by Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The three officers implicated in the unlawful act are identified as ASP Doubara Edonyabo, ASP Talent Mungo, and Inspector Odey Michael. The victims were reportedly apprehended in Abia State and taken to Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states on allegations of fraud by yet-to-be-seen complainants. The officers then extorted the sum of $3,000 (equivalent to N4.2 million) from the victims during their ordeal.

According to Iringe-Koko, immediate steps were taken to apprehend the officers after the incident came to light, and a thorough investigation was conducted. The extorted money has been recovered and returned to the victims as of January 18, 2024.

Addressing the press, Iringe-Koko stated, “Following a comprehensive inquiry, it has been established that the actions of the officers in question were in clear violation of the law and the ethical standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force. As a result, appropriate disciplinary measures are being taken to address this grave misconduct.”

She further revealed that the two Assistant Superintendents of Police have been issued official queries, while the Inspector, Odey Michael, is slated for an orderly room trial. To emphasize transparency and accountability, the Rivers State Police Command has chosen to publicly parade the officers before the press.

The spokesperson reiterated the commitment of the command to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and accountability. She acknowledged the negative impact of such misconduct on the reputation of the Rivers State Command and the Nigeria Police Force but emphasized that the actions of a few individuals should not overshadow the dedication and sacrifice of the majority of officers who serve with honor and distinction.
