Delta State Government has approved more than N15 billion for the construction of Phase-Three of flood control measures in Warri/Effurun and environs in Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas of the state.

Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, the State Commissioner for Information, announced this in Asaba while addressing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He said phase-three of the flood control measures would cover Airport Road, Ugborikoko, Bendel Estate, Ugboroke, and environs.

Dr Osuoza said the State Executive Council also approved the release of a N600 million counterpart fund for the Sustainable Development Goals, Conditional Grants Scheme for 2024, to enable it to access N1.2 billion from the SDG funds.

Governor Oborevwori and members of his cabinet were deeply concerned about the hardship that Nigerians and Deltans were facing and had resolved to do everything humanly possible to alleviate the plight of the residents, the Commissioner reported.

Meanwhile, Prince Godwin Ejinyere, Director-General of Warri Uvwe and Environs Development Agency, had said Phase-One of the flood control project was already completed, while Phase-Two was “near completion”.

Prince Ejinyere said the agency was planning a “lasting solution” for the flood ravaging the Warri Stadium area.

He hinted that the design work around Enerhen Community, Igbudu, and Odibo Estate was in progress.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), 28 deaths were recorded in the 2023 flood disaster; about 150,000 were affected, while 48,000 were displaced.
