The media profession in Nigeria is about to witness a boost as the Nigerian Senate allowed the Media Practitioners Registration Council (MPRC) Bill, sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel, to sail through its first reading.

This bill, aimed at establishing the Media Practitioners Registration Council of Nigeria, seeks to regulate and control the media profession, enhance the quality of journalism, and set standards for media practitioners across various platforms including print, electronic, and social media.

The proposed council, as outlined in the bill, will be responsible for appointing, promoting, and disciplining members, as well as reviewing and updating standards for the media profession. It will also oversee the accreditation of media premises, formulate codes of conduct, and liaise with international bodies to promote professionalism within the industry.

Key provisions of the bill include the composition of the council, which will consist of representatives from various media sectors, academia, government ministries, and the public interest.

Additionally, the bill outlines the functions and powers of the council, including the issuance of licenses to qualified practitioners, supervision of training institutions, and the establishment of investigation and disciplinary panels to address professional misconduct.

The bill emphasizes the importance of registration for media practitioners, stipulating categories such as members, associate members, fellows, and honorary members, each with specific qualifications and criteria for registration. It also addresses the payment of practicing fees, the maintenance of a register of qualified practitioners, and the publication of qualifications accepted for registration.

Furthermore, the bill includes provisions for financial management, staff employment, and the Minister’s authority to give directives to the Council. It also outlines offenses and penalties for fraudulent practices, ensuring accountability and professionalism within the media profession.

Once enacted, the MPRCN Bill is poised to significantly impact the media landscape in Nigeria, promoting ethical standards, professionalism, and accountability among media practitioners.
