Mr Johnson was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital in London last Sunday.

He was was transferred to intensive care on Monday after his condition worsened, but he was discharged back to a ward on Thursday.

Reacting on Twitter, the Prime Minister’s pregnant fiance Carrie Symonds said: “I cannot thank our magnificent NHS enough.

“The staff at St Thomas’ Hospital have been incredible. I will never, ever be able to repay you and I will never stop thanking you.

“There were times last week that were very dark indeed. My heart goes out to all those in similar situations, worried sick about their loved ones.

“Thank you also to everyone who sent such kind messages of support. Today I’m feeling incredibly lucky.”

In a short statement on Saturday, the Prime Minister thanked staff at the hospital for saving his life.

He said: “I can’t thank them enough. I owe them my life.”

Speaking at yesterday’s Downing Street press conference, Home Secretary Priti Patel said Mr Johnson needs time to rest and recuperate.

Ms Patel said: “The message to the Prime Minister is, we want him to get better and he needs time and space to rest, recuperate and recover.

“It is vital that our Prime Minister gets well.”
