The commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has, in a compelling keynote address delivered today, emphasized the pivotal role of water in fostering peace and cooperation within communities and among individuals.

Speaking at the celebration of World Water Day 2024, Wahab underscored the theme of “Water for Peace” and called for collective action towards ensuring water security and sustainability across Lagos State.

The commissioner articulated the significance of water not only as a fundamental necessity for life but also as a potent force for building bridges between people.

“Water is not just a resource; it is a catalyst for dialogue and understanding,” he remarked, emphasizing the theme’s relevance in transcending boundaries and promoting mutual respect.

Central to Wahab’s address was the imperative of inclusivity and equity in water management. He stressed the importance of guaranteeing universal access to clean water, regardless of background or circumstance, as a means to mitigate conflicts and foster social justice. He highlighted the recently approved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Policy as a pivotal framework guiding efforts towards this goal, outlining its comprehensive approach to water conservation, pollution prevention, and equitable distribution.

Moreover, he commended the ongoing efforts of the Lagos Urban WASH programme, supported by USAID, in advancing water security and sustainability in urban areas. Through innovative interventions and partnerships, the programme is enhancing water infrastructure, improving sanitation services, and empowering communities to manage their water resources effectively.

A notable aspect of the LUWASH programme is its support for various activities within the Water Sector MDAs, including the rehabilitation of Micro/Mini Water works for Lagos Water Corporation, capacity building for the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, and the development of a business case for the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office.

Wahab called for collective commitment to ensuring water remains a source of unity rather than division, while urging collaboration across borders and sectors, emphasizing the potential for every drop of water to contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future for the residents of Lagos State.
