Renowned Nigerian highlife singer Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara passes away

The Nigerian music industry mourns the loss of esteemed highlife singer, Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara, who passed away on Thursday, according to an announcement from his record label, Derda Promotions.

Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, Ammarachi Anyanwu, confirmed the sad news, although the cause of his demise was not disclosed.

In a statement, Derda Promotions expressed profound sadness over Kabaka’s passing, highlighting his significant contribution to revolutionizing highlife music. Described as an iconic figure, Kabaka was celebrated for his talent as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, captivating fans with infectious highlife tunes.

Kabaka co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, gaining widespread recognition for their socially conscious lyrics and authentic sound. Transitioning to a solo career in 1976, he formed The Kabaka International Guitar Band, releasing fourteen albums and delivering hits like ‘Mangala Special’, showcasing his versatility.

Affiliating with The Imo City Band later in his career, Kabaka solidified his status as a highlife legend. His triumphant return to the music scene in September 2023 with the album ‘The Return of Kabaka’, supported by Derda Promotions, garnered over a million streams and earned a place among the top 100 albums worldwide.
