The Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has taken decisive action against property owners in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo. Owners of properties built on the Right-Of-Way of drainage channels have been served with a 48-hour contravention notice.

This enforcement action, in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, underscores the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to ensure the unhindered flow of rainwater and prevent flooding across the state.

In an effort to safeguard lives and properties from the recurrent menace of flooding during the rainy season, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, led by Tokunbo Wahab, has intensified its enforcement activities.

The recent focus has been on Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo, where properties encroaching upon drainage channels have been identified.

According to officials from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department, these properties have been constructed in violation of established guidelines, impeding the natural flow of rainwater and posing a risk of flooding to both the estate and surrounding areas. Consequently, the owners of these properties have been served with a 48-hour contravention notice to rectify the situation.

This enforcement action is not only a response to immediate concerns but also aligns with the broader objectives of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. The law mandates strict compliance with regulations aimed at preserving the integrity of drainage systems and preventing environmental degradation.

The proactive stance taken by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration underscores its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of Lagosians. By prioritizing the enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, the government aims to mitigate the impact of flooding, which has historically been a significant challenge during the rainy season.

Residents and property owners in Jakande Estate and other affected areas are urged to cooperate with the authorities and take the necessary steps to comply with the contravention notice within the stipulated timeframe. Failure to do so may result in further enforcement measures, including fines and penalties, as prescribed by law.

In addition to enforcement efforts, the Lagos State government continues to invest in infrastructure projects aimed at improving drainage systems and enhancing resilience to flooding. These initiatives, coupled with robust enforcement measures, are essential components of the government’s comprehensive strategy to create a safer and more sustainable environment for all residents.

As the 48-hour deadline approaches, the spotlight remains on Jakande Estate and other areas where drainage violations persist.
