The Lagos State Government has called for increased vigilance and the adoption of precautionary measures following a recent surge in severe gastroenteritis cases, which may indicate a potential cholera outbreak.

In the last 48 hours, there has been a notable rise in gastroenteritis cases reported across various communities, prompting immediate action from health authorities. Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed in a statement that severe cases have emerged in Eti Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Areas.

Prof. Abayomi reported that the situation has led to approximately 60 hospital admissions and five deaths, largely due to patients presenting with extreme dehydration after seeking treatment late.

“We have activated a statewide heightened surveillance and response. The Ministry of Health Directorate of Environmental Health and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency have been alerted to investigate a possible water contamination source in the Lekki Victoria Island axis,” Prof. Abayomi announced.

While a cholera outbreak is suspected, samples are currently being tested for confirmation. As of April 28, 2024, Nigeria has recorded 815 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths across 25 states.

To manage the situation and provide timely assistance, suspected cases can be reported through emergency hotlines: 08023169485, 08137412348, or by using helplines 767 or 112.

Prof. Abayomi assured the public that the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of its citizens. He emphasized the importance of adopting preventive measures and promptly reporting any suspected cases to protect the community.

“We urge everyone to adopt these preventive measures and report any suspected cases promptly to safeguard our communities,” he stated.
