In democracies with written constitutions and presidential governments, the powers of the legislature are substantial.

According to the former governor of Ogun State, Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) vests the legislative powers of Nigeria in a National Assembly comprising a Senate and a House of Representatives.

This framework empowers the National Assembly to make laws for the peace, order, and good governance of the Federation.

Senator Daniel was elected on 25th February 2023 and sworn in on 13th June 2023.

He outlined the roles of a modern legislator as lawmaking, oversight, and representation, and his presentation adhered to these categories.

Over the past 365 days, he has submitted 11 bills and one motion to the Rules and Business Committee.

Notable bills include the South West Development Commission Bill, the Federal College of Aviation Technology Bill, and the Terminal Illness Trust Fund Bill.

On the 5th of July 2023, Senator Daniel moved a motion titled “Urgent Need to Intervene in the Flooding Issues in Sagamu, Ijebu Areas of Ogun East Senatorial District, Ogun State”.

This led to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) visiting the affected areas and providing palliative materials.

Senator Daniel’s oversight functions included participation in 15 Standing Committees, where he contributed to regulating the procedures of the Senate and investigating national issues.

Notable committee assignments include Chair of the Senate Committee on Navy and Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on National Identity & Population.

In terms of representation, Senator Daniel established fully functional Constituency Offices in Abuja and Sagamu.

He appointed special advisers, constituency supervisors, and coordinators to ensure effective communication and engagement with his constituents.

Through these offices, he facilitated employment opportunities for his constituents in various federal ministries, departments, and parastatals, including the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Force, and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Senator Daniel’s achievements also encompass numerous community projects such as the renovation of Otunba Gbenga Daniel Model School in Sagamu and Omu Ajose Comprehensive High School in Odogbolu, as well as the installation of motorised boreholes in Ijebu Ode and Abobi, Ago Iwoye.

Additionally, he conducted medical outreach programmes, distributed fertilisers, and provided training and empowerment for farmers and youths.

Through his dedication to legislative duties and community development, Senator Gbenga Daniel has set a benchmark for impactful governance and continues to work towards the betterment of the Ogun East Senatorial District.
