‘Before treatment’ Police DC dies of COVID-19 in Edo

Details have emerged of how Francis Bissong, a deputy commissioner police in charge of zonal criminal investigation department Edo state, died from COVID-19 complications in his official apartment in Benin, on Tuesday, April 21.

The Edo state commissioner of information, Patrick Okundia, had earlier announced the death of Bissong but he did not go into details.

However, Paul Yakadi, an assistant inspector-general of police in charge of zone 5, Benin has narrated the events that led to Bissong’s death, The Cable reports.

Yakadi in a statement disclosed that the deceased had on April 9 travelled to Akure, Ondo state capital, to see his family and celebrate Easter with them.

The late police officer was said to have returned to Benin five days later, where he complained of illness after developing symptoms of high fever.

It was disclosed that on April 18, a medical doctor in charge of the police medical services took Bissong’s blood sample for examination and analysis.

Yakadi said the result of the analysis which came out on April 21 tested positive for COVID-19.

He stated that officials of the Nigeria Centre For Decease Control (NCDC) were immediately contacted about the result.

NCDC reportedly came to evacuate him to the isolation centre and treatment but discovered that the Bissong died an hour before their arrival at his official residence.

Meanwhile, Kaduna state police have dispersed a crowd of villagers at the burial of a young man held on Saturday, April 25, at Maraban Rido community in Chikun local government area of the state.

According to Channels TV, the security operatives arrested several people while dispersing the gathering for violating the state government’s lockdown order.

Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs in Kaduna state, intercepted the villagers during an inspection tour of with heads of security agencies in some parts of the state.

The state commissioner of police, Umar Muri stated that the burial violated the government’s directive banning ceremonies and other social gatherings.
