Reno Omokri has tackled Nigerians who criticised Seyi Tinubu’s presence in the Council chambers of the State House Abuja, during the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria on 23rd August 2024.

On 26th August, social media users on X questioned Seyi’s attendance, arguing that he is not a government official and, therefore, should not have been at the event.

In response, Omokri took to Instagram to dismiss the criticisms as “silly,” pointing out that it is not unusual for the children of presidents in Western countries to attend or even represent their parents at state functions.

He cited examples such as Chelsea Clinton representing Hillary Clinton during a state visit to Nigeria in 2000 and Ivanka Trump serving as a Senior Advisor to her father, President Donald Trump.

Omokri further argued that Seyi Tinubu’s mere presence at the ceremony should not be viewed as a crime or wrongdoing. He emphasised that the swearing-in of justices and federal cabinet members is a public event, where family members and friends are typically allowed to witness the proceedings. Omokri suggested that those criticising Seyi might be projecting their own strained relationships with their fathers onto the situation.

His post reads:

“So, it is silly to attack President Tinubu because his son, Seyi, was at the Presidential Villa during the swearing-in of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.”

Omokri concluded by urging people to focus on more significant issues, instead of making a big deal out of a minor event.
