The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 204 new cases of coronavirus in Nigeria.

The NCDC via its official Twitter account on Thursday night, April 30, revealed that 80 of the new cases are in Kano, 45 in Lagos, 12 in Gombe, nine each in Bauchi and Sokoto, seven each in Borno and Edo, six each in Rivers and Ogun, four each in the FCT, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, three in Kaduna, two each in Oyo, Delta and Nasarawa and one each in Ondo and Kebbi.

With the new development, Nigeria now has a total of 1,932 cases in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory; Cross River and Kogi have not recorded any case of COVID-19.

However, what attracts Nigerians on social media the most about the new cases is how Kano “displaced” Lagos which has been recording the highest daily cases since February.

With the 80 cases confirmed on Wednesday, Kano now has 219 cases, thereby displacing the FCT from the second spot.

President Buhari had earlier ordered the lockdown of Kano following the spate of mysterious deaths the state recorded in the past week.

We collects some of the insightful Twitter reactions by Nigerian to the COVID-19 situation in Kano:

Dipo Awojide said: “80 in Kano. Even if Buhari open up Lagos and Abuja, they should lock up Kano and keep the keys in Aso Rock for now. Because the stories from Kano is really shocking and disappointing. #COVID19”

“Kano now has the second highest number of active COVID-19 patients in Nigeria, less than three weeks after recording its index case,” Adetutu Balogun tweeted.

Zaddy Ajala wrote: “We saw new 80 new cases coronavirus in Kano yesterday.

“Today, Ganduje asks FG to relax lockdown in Kano. I don’t know if you I should cry or laugh, because something is definitely wrong.”

How Nigerians are reacting as Lagos records 74 COVID-19 cases in one day, total now 504

“With 80 cases from kano. @GovNiger @abusbello @PE_Unit @Nupenchi_please the task force on regulating inter and intra travels in the state should be told to remain vigilant in ensuring that vehicles and people like this shouldn’t be given access into the State,” Abdullahi Yusuf commented.

Sir Lord Mayor tweeted: “Kano State overtakes Lagos! But we warned oh! 80 cases in just one day! Help for the Present hour!”

“NCDC report card, 80 in Kano and 45 in Lagos. You’ll be doing yourself a lot of good by staying at home but if your immunity is strong enough, come out and play,” Sweetum reacted.

Great Oracle tweeted: “80 confirmed cases in one day in Kano? The fatalism of the hand wash and drinking dirty water challenge!”

Meanwhile, two Lagos-based lawyers, Isaiah Odje and Adebayo Johnson, have said the partial easing of lockdown in Lagos, against the spread of novel coronavirus, is risky.

The lawyers spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Thursday, April 30 in the mega-city.

Odje said easing the lockdown in Lagos, at this time, was not the best decision, warning that “it is risky and may result in more casualties.’’
