In a Telegram post, Durov defended himself against the investigation, arguing that he shouldn’t be personally held accountable for third-party crimes on Telegram.

He criticised the use of outdated laws, stating that such legal actions could deter innovators from developing new technologies.

“Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach,” Durov said.

Acknowledging the platform’s growing user base and its associated challenges, he affirmed that Telegram is not “an anarchic paradise”. The influx of users has made it easier for criminals to exploit the app, leading Durov to prioritize improving the situation.

He stated that internal efforts have already begun and promised to share more updates on their progress soon.
