Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi declared that individuals convicted of corruption should not receive state pardons. He proposed this in a constitutional review.

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]igeria’s Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has firmly stated that individuals convicted of corruption should not receive state pardons.

Speaking at a roundtable in Abuja organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Fagbemi announced his intention to propose a constitutional amendment.

He stated that during the next constitutional review, he will advocate for the exclusion of those found guilty of corruption from benefiting from the prerogative of mercy. This move aims to deter future corruption and uphold justice in Nigeria.

Fagbemi emphasized the need for collaboration among all stakeholders, particularly state attorneys-general, in the fight against corruption. He urged them to resist the influence of nepotism, political rivalry, and bigotry when prosecuting cases, which can compromise justice.

The Minister also called on anti-graft agencies to conduct thorough investigations before making arrests. He cautioned against rushing to judgment due to public sentiment, urging investigators to take their time and avoid media trials.

“Let us be thorough and take our time before inviting someone for questioning,” Fagbemi remarked. He noted that capturing just a few significant corrupt figures each year, if done meticulously, is more beneficial than hastily claiming a big catch.
