The national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is expected to meet today, Thursday, in Abuja, amidst rising concerns of an impending strike.
The meeting comes after ASUU issued a 14-day strike notice to the Federal Government on September 24, warning that they would shut down universities if longstanding grievances were not resolved.
This ultimatum followed a prior 21-day notice issued on August 18, urging the government to address the union’s demands.
The union’s dissatisfaction stems from the government’s failure to honour previous agreements, including those related to university funding, welfare of lecturers, and the implementation of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
Today’s meeting will focus on delivering a “State of the Nation” address, where ASUU leaders are expected to outline their next steps.
There is growing uncertainty among students and academic institutions, with fears of another disruption to the academic calendar due to a possible strike.
ASUU’s demands have consistently focused on improving the quality of higher education in Nigeria. However, the union and the government have been locked in a cycle of negotiations and unmet promises for years.
