PDP sets sights on national comeback, vows to secure governorship positions in 2027

PDP 2027 national comeback

The Peoples Democratic Party aims for a 2027 comeback, vowing to win more governorship seats and reclaim power in a bid to end Nigeria’s economic struggles.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its intentions to expand its influence and return to power in 2027, vowing to secure more governorship positions and ultimately reclaim the presidency.

This was the message delivered by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) on Sunday during a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

Speaking on behalf of the NWC, the party’s National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, highlighted widespread dissatisfaction and economic hardship as key drivers for the party’s resurgence.

“The disenchantment across the country is palpable,” Yayare stated. “PDP will produce more governors in 2027 because Nigerians are yearning for change. If we do not take over the leadership of the country, it could mark the end of democracy in Nigeria.”

He emphasised that the PDP remains the only credible opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Nothing stops PDP from producing the president and vice president in 2027. The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land.

The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for PDP’s return,” Yayare declared. “The APC cannot even campaign without facing public outrage. Nigeria is in your hands – we need your support to salvage this country.”

The NWC revealed plans to visit PDP-governed states, urging party governors to strengthen unity and align strategies for the upcoming general elections.

The visit also carried a note of condolence for Diri, mourning the loss of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Jituboh and Bayelsa Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.

PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, reaffirmed the NWC’s commitment to repositioning the party as a viable leadership alternative for Nigerians.

“We are ready to strengthen the PDP and demonstrate that there is a better option for Nigerians,” Okoye said. “Respect for the party and its governors will be central to our strategy moving forward.”

Okoye also lauded Diri’s leadership and development strides, describing him as a model for progressive governance.

In his response, Governor Diri stressed the need for unity among PDP governors, calling on them to prioritise collective progress over personal interests.

“We need to work closely together and do what is right without fear or favour,” Diri said. “Consensus-building should always be our first option for resolving issues.

Running to the courts at every disagreement weakens us. If PDP crumbles under our watch, posterity will not forgive us.”

Diri reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, warning against internal sabotage.

“If anyone feels bigger than the party, they are free to leave. PDP made most of us—we cannot pretend to be PDP by day and something else by night. We must cleanse our house from within,” he asserted.

Supporting the idea of a broader coalition to challenge APC dominance, Diri emphasised the PDP’s critical role in forming a “mega party” capable of leading Nigeria out of its current struggles.

“Our focus should be on strengthening the PDP as a beacon of hope for Nigeria,” Diri concluded. “Together, we can restore this nation.”
