Ogun State pledges justice for the murdered Fatinoye family as killers face execution, assuring the public that due process will be upheld

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering justice for the brutal murder of Kehinde Fatinoye, his wife, Bukola, and their son, Oreoluwa.

Their killers were recently sentenced to death by hanging, and authorities have assured the public that the execution will proceed as required by law.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Communication and Strategy, emphasised that the administration would not waver in ensuring justice is served.

“Justice must be served. The state government, through the Ministry of Justice, recently inspected the prison facilities to ensure that the section for death row inmates is in order.

The government will not hesitate to ensure that those condemned to death receive the punishment they deserve,” Akinmade stated.

His remarks follow increasing public pressure on Governor Abiodun to sign the execution order, ensuring that the convicts do not evade justice.

Many Nigerians argue that death row inmates often remain in prison for years, sustained by taxpayers’ money while their sentences are delayed.

Akinmade acknowledged growing concerns about the enforcement of capital punishment but reassured the public that justice would not be compromised.

“The court has delivered its judgment, and the government has made its stance clear. The people should rest assured that justice will be served. These individuals must face the consequences of their actions,” he affirmed.

He further warned that failing to carry out executions could embolden criminals who believe they can escape the full weight of the law.

“If those sentenced to death are not punished accordingly, it creates room for others to commit similar crimes, thinking they might only end up in jail. The government must prioritise the people’s safety at this critical time,” he added.

When asked about the next steps if Governor Abiodun does not sign the death warrant, Akinmade maintained that the governor would act in accordance with the law.

The Fatinoye family was murdered in a horrific attack led by their driver, Lekan Adekanbi, who conspired with other assailants to invade their home at around 2 a.m. The couple was killed before their bodies and house were set ablaze.

The attackers then bound their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son before throwing them into the Ogun River. While Oreoluwa tragically drowned, the adopted son miraculously survived.

In a February 2023 confession, Adekanbi admitted to orchestrating the murders because his employers refused to grant him a salary increase or a loan to buy a motorcycle.

“I took the step because the couple refused to increase my salary, and when I approached them for a loan, they didn’t oblige,” he confessed.

Public outcry continues to mount, with many demanding swift enforcement of the death sentences. Concerns persist that justice will be delayed, as previous cases have shown hesitation in carrying out capital punishment in Nigeria.
