Lagos deploys an Intelligent Transport System to monitor speeding and traffic violations, aiming to enhance road safety and traffic management

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to enhance road safety and regulate traffic flow.

These installations will work alongside the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other traffic management technologies to monitor speeding and enforce road regulations.

Announcing the initiative at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasised the critical role of these ITS sites in preventing accidents and ensuring order on Lagos roads.

“The checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, where the speed limit is 80km/h, while another is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h,” Osiyemi stated.

In addition to speed enforcement, two e-police sites have been set up at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

These high-tech systems will monitor traffic violations such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, reverse driving on highways, and non-compliance with lane discipline.

Osiyemi urged motorists to comply with the new regulations, warning that violations will attract hefty fines. Running a red light will incur a penalty of ₦20,000, while exceeding speed limits will result in a ₦50,000 fine.

“Enforcement will commence immediately. Offenders will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service department, detailing their violations and the corresponding fines,” he added.

However, the commissioner clarified that the initiative is not designed to be punitive but to promote responsible driving habits and reduce road accidents.

“The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” Osiyemi stated.

The briefing was attended by key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, and representatives from Huawei Technologies.
