Nigeria’s telecom sector advances as NCC issues the first MVNO mobile number series, 0712, to Vitel Wireless, enhancing competition and innovation

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has allocated the first-ever mobile number series to a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecom industry.

The recipient, Vitel Wireless, now holds the unique 0712 number series, a move that underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering competition and innovation in the sector.

The NCC highlighted that this development represents a crucial step in Nigeria’s evolving telecommunications landscape.

Historically, the MVNO market in Nigeria has been tightly regulated, with only a limited number of players gaining entry under strict licensing conditions.

Vitel’s emergence as a fully licensed MVNO, complete with its own number series, signifies a shift towards a more competitive and dynamic telecom ecosystem.

Kenneth Nwabueze, Chairman and CEO of Vitel Wireless, expressed confidence in the company’s readiness to serve the Nigerian market.

He described the allocation of the 0712 series as a demonstration of the NCC’s trust in Vitel’s vision and capabilities.

“As part of its international readiness, Vitel has also been issued its own international routing code by the NCC. This enables seamless global connectivity and positions us to offer high-quality international telecommunications services,” Nwabueze stated.

With all regulatory requirements successfully met, Vitel Wireless is now set for market entry.

The company aims to introduce innovative, affordable, and customer-centric telecom solutions tailored to the needs of individuals and businesses across Nigeria.
