African entrepreneurs gain vital export knowledge at the US-Africa Trade and Business Network’s Export Masterclass in Lagos

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he US-Africa Trade and Business Network (USATBN), under the leadership of its Executive Director, Mr. Gbenga Omotayo, recently organised the “Export and Prosper Masterclass” in Lagos, a comprehensive training programme designed to equip African entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully export their products to the United States.

The masterclass provided an in-depth understanding of the export process, guiding participants through product development, sourcing, packaging, labelling, marketing, shipping, and compliance with US market regulations.

During the training, Omotayo emphasised the importance of developing a strategic export plan, explaining that exporting is not just about sending products abroad but about establishing a sustainable, long-term trade strategy that aligns with global market demands.

He walked participants through each step of the export journey, ensuring they gained practical insights into the complexities of international trade.

By the end of the session, each attendee had developed a customised export guide tailored to their specific products, allowing them to take immediate action towards penetrating the US market.

The masterclass incorporated eight structured activities, each designed to provide hands-on experience in key aspects of exporting.

The first activity focused on identifying untapped export potential, helping participants analyse global demand trends and evaluate the suitability of their products for the US market.

The second activity, centred on product building and sourcing, guided entrepreneurs on selecting high-quality raw materials and ensuring their products met US industry standards.

Participants also learned about consumer preferences and cultural expectations in the US through a dedicated marketing session, which covered branding, advertising, and positioning strategies to make their products appealing to American buyers.

Another critical component was packaging and labelling, where attendees received training on US regulations, including mandatory product information, barcode requirements, and visual presentation to attract retail buyers.

Pricing was another crucial aspect covered during the session.

Omotayo explained how to establish competitive pricing strategies based on market research, cost analysis, and competitor benchmarking.

The training also delved into marketing and distribution, teaching participants how to leverage online and offline sales channels to maximise product reach.

Export logistics formed a key part of the masterclass, with discussions on shipping methods, warehousing, customs regulations, and risk management.

Attendees learned how to assess the feasibility of exporting their products by calculating shipping costs, evaluating distribution channels, and understanding potential risks such as tariffs and trade restrictions.

The final activity involved creating an actionable export plan, where each participant developed a step-by-step roadmap to begin their export journey, incorporating all the knowledge gained during the masterclass.

At the conclusion of the event, Omotayo awarded certificates to all participants, recognising their efforts and new expertise in export trade.

He reiterated USATBN’s commitment to supporting African entrepreneurs in scaling their businesses internationally and encouraged them to take advantage of ongoing mentorship and resources available on www.usafricahub.com.
