President Bola Tinubu strongly dismissed fears of the APC aiming for a one party state, affirming his commitment to multi party democracy in Nigeria and rejecting such a notion

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ne Party State concerns have been directly addressed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly dismissed suggestions that the All Progressives Congress (APC) intends to establish a one party state, offering a strong personal assurance against such a political landscape.

Addressing those who voice alarm about the APC’s purported ambition for a one party system, President Tinubu stated, “To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error.”

He further clarified his unwavering stance, asserting that “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one party state as good for Nigeria.”

President Tinubu also emphasised his personal record, confirming, “I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC.”

The President also offered a pragmatic view on political realignments.

He acknowledged the fluidity within the political environment, noting that “we cannot blame anybody seeking to bail out of a sinking ship even without a life jacket.”

This statement suggests an acceptance of politicians moving between parties, rather than viewing it as a move towards singular party dominance.

His comments provide a direct response to a significant debate within Nigerian political discourse regarding the future of its multi party democracy.
