The event, a week-long celebration of legal excellence, marks a transformative step in regional legal engagement and the promotion of human rights across West Africa.

The competition provided a dynamic platform for young legal minds to simulate court proceedings, sharpen their reasoning, and build deeper understanding of regional judicial frameworks.

Organised by the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, this initiative aligns with its goal of fostering greater youth participation in regional integration through the law.

Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves, President of the Court, described the event as a “historic milestone” in the pursuit of regional justice.

He praised the students’ eloquence and declared that “every team is a winner” for its dedication and insight.

He added that such platforms will strengthen the legal culture of West Africa and promote justice, cooperation, and the rule of law.

Ahmadu Bello University emerged as the winner, taking home a ₦5 million prize, while the University of Jos secured second place with a ₦3 million award.

Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma, Vice-President of the Court, commended the competition as a powerful example of vision meeting execution.

“Whether or not you won today,” he told participants, “you have all emerged as ambassadors of law and justice in the ECOWAS region.”

Following its overwhelming success, the ECOWAS Court announced that the competition will become an annual flagship event, expanding participation to universities across all member states.

This decision reflects the Court’s deep commitment to nurturing a generation of legal professionals who understand, protect, and advance human rights and regional unity.

Justice Ousmane Diallo, Chairman of the Organising Committee, acknowledged the contributions of judges, mentors, institutions, and partners, noting their vital role in ensuring the event’s success.

He affirmed that the competition represents not only a showcase of youthful brilliance but also a catalyst for meaningful legal cooperation across West Africa.

The ECOWAS Moot Court Competition has set a new benchmark for legal education and engagement in the region.
