David Coote charged by FA over derogatory remarks about Jürgen Klopp. The ex-referee also faces UEFA ban and addresses past personal struggles

The Football Association on Tuesday formally charged Coote over disparaging statements he made about ex-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

The charge stems from a video that surfaced online late last year. In it, the 42-year-old was heard making offensive remarks about Klopp and Liverpool dating back to 2020. One comment, which the FA cited as an “aggravated breach” of its regulations, referenced Klopp’s German nationality.

Coote, who was sacked by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd in December 2024, has since faced scrutiny on several fronts.

UEFA, Europe’s football governing body, imposed a ban earlier this year, preventing him from officiating until June 2026.

In a separate controversy, a video appeared in November showing Coote snorting a white powder, reportedly during the Euro 2024 tournament.

Although this footage added to public concerns, the FA concluded its investigation into unrelated allegations of gambling misconduct.

It announced that no further action would be taken on that matter, and that Coote had consistently denied the claims.

Speaking in a January interview, Coote opened up about personal issues that affected his career. He revealed that he is gay and shared how the pressure of hiding his sexuality had impacted his performance and decision-making.

“I am truly sorry for any offence caused,” Coote stated as the FA prepared disciplinary proceedings against him.

While his future in football remains uncertain, the case highlights the consequences of inappropriate conduct, both online and off the pitch.
