The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that her body was recovered following a multi-agency operation lasting several days.

The incident took place on Monday, June 30, at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop and close to Fadeko International Hotel.

The Lagos Fire Service received a distress call at 7:34 p.m. and immediately dispatched a team from the Ejigbo Fire Station.

According to Maria Fadairo, Senior Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the woman fell into a deep, uncovered well located at the front of a one-storey building still under construction.

The structure consists of six two-bedroom flats on a fenced 648-square-metre plot.

Given the complex and dangerous nature of the situation, a joint operation was launched involving multiple agencies. After intensive search and recovery efforts, the woman’s remains were recovered on Thursday, July 10.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service led the operation in collaboration with the Nigerian Police, LASAMBUS, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and other emergency agencies.

“The victim was recovered dead and handed over to SEHMU, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service stood by as the Nigeria Police observed proceedings,” the agency stated.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, offered her condolences to the victim’s family. She also stressed the urgent need for improved safety measures at construction sites.

“A 170-foot uncovered well is a severe hazard that must never be left unsecured,” she noted.
