Ogun State labour strike

Ogun State labour strike starts as workers protest pension deductions, unpaid wage arrears, and lack of dialogue. NLC urges swift action from the government

The Ogun State labour strike has officially commenced, following a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) due to unresolved issues with the state government.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, NLC Chairman Mr. Demola Hameed-Benco announced the indefinite strike.

The action comes after a statewide congress of civil and public service workers under organised labour.

According to the union, the government has failed to implement the minimum wage, remit pension deductions, and resolve other long-standing grievances.

Workers also criticised the poor implementation of the Ogun State Pension Reform Law (OGSPRL) 2008, amended in 2013, which governs the Contributory Pension Scheme.

“All members are directed to withdraw their services till further notice,” the NLC declared. “Any worker who disobeys the directive does so at their own risk, the union will not bear responsibility for such actions.”

The statement urged the government to initiate talks, stressing that the situation demands immediate attention.

“The NLC urge the Ogun government to, as soon as possible, call for dialogue to address the concerns of the teeming workers.”

The union closed its statement by calling for unity, adding, “A workers united can never be defeated. Solidarity forever.”

Public services across Ogun State are expected to be disrupted until the government responds to the workers’ demands.
