NUJ Lagos condemns repeated harassment of journalists by Sanwo-Olu’s CSO, Kunle Fagbemi, demanding apology and protection of press freedom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council has condemned the conduct of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Security Officer, Kunle Fagbemi, following repeated incidents of harassment of journalists.

The latest incident occurred on Saturday at the Lagos House, Ikeja, where Fagbemi allegedly obstructed and verbally assaulted members of the governor’s press crew while they were on duty.

In a statement signed by NUJ Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, and Secretary, Tunde Olalere, the union expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of intimidation, noting that this was the third time the CSO had been accused of unprofessional behavior.

“This growing pattern of intimidation is not only unprofessional but also an affront to press freedom and democratic values,” the NUJ stated.

The union condemned what it called an abuse of power and demanded an immediate apology from Fagbemi. It also urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to take concrete steps to prevent a recurrence.

“It is unfortunate that the concerned personnel, who ought to know better, has chosen to act in such a manner under the guise of performing his duties,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, confirmed that he had been briefed on the matter.

He explained that he had met with the press corps and tendered an apology on behalf of the governor’s office.

According to Akosile, Fagbemi claimed he was only attempting to restrict reporters from entering a restricted area, insisting the issue was a misunderstanding that would be resolved amicably.
