Balogun Market violence

Balogun Market violence kills one trader in Lagos Island; shops shut, police intervene to prevent escalation as panic spreads

Balogun Market violence on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, led to the death of a trader and widespread panic at Lagos Island’s largest commercial hub.

The incident began with a heated argument between two young men described as “market runners.”

One, a Yoruba native, reportedly stabbed his Igbo counterpart with a bottle. The second man allegedly retaliated with the same weapon, fatally injuring the first.

Voice notes and messages circulating online falsely claimed that widespread ethnic attacks followed the incident.

However, eyewitnesses and traders at the scene confirmed only one fatality, disputing viral claims of multiple deaths.

“One person died. That I can confirm,” a trader told News Express around 3:30 p.m. from inside the market.

The violence triggered fear among traders, many of whom locked up their shops and vacated the area.

Security personnel quickly responded, arriving at the market to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

“Police are already here, and things are calming down,” the source said. “But people are still on edge.”

The Balogun market violence highlights long-standing tensions and the dangers of misinformation in crowded, ethnically diverse spaces.

Authorities have urged residents and traders to avoid spreading unverified information and to cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
