Sokoto boat accident has plunged Shagari Local Government Area into mourning after a vessel carrying passengers capsized on Thursday evening, leaving many feared dead.

This tragedy marks the third boat accident in Sokoto within one month, heightening concerns over safety on waterways.

Confirming the incident, Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Aminu Liman Bodinga, said officials from SEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the National Inland Waterways Authority have launched search and rescue operations.

Eyewitnesses reported that the overloaded boat capsized mid-river, throwing all passengers into the water. While the exact number of casualties is still unclear, local accounts indicate significant loss of life.

Residents and experts have blamed recurring accidents on poor safety standards, inadequate motorised boats, and the lack of life jackets.

Many have renewed calls on government authorities to urgently enforce safety regulations and provide safer transport alternatives.

The Sokoto State Government is expected to release a formal statement once rescue operations are completed. In the meantime, families in Shagari and nearby communities remain anxious, awaiting news of their missing loved ones.

The spate of accidents has reignited debate over Nigeria’s inland waterway safety, with calls growing louder for reforms to prevent further tragedies.
