The Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences has inaugurated four new faculties to meet the rising demand for nursing education, with plans underway to commence degree programmes in partnership with LAUTECH

In a major stride toward educational expansion and healthcare development, the Oyo State College of Nursing Sciences, Eleyele, Ibadan, has inaugurated four new faculties.

The move aims to meet the rising demand for nursing education and marks a significant step toward transforming the college into a degree-awarding institution.

The new faculties, carved out of existing departments, are:

  • Faculty of Medical Surgical Nursing
  • Faculty of Maternal and Child Health
  • Faculty of Public Health and Community Care
  • Faculty of Psychiatric and Mental Health

This milestone was officially announced on Tuesday, and confirmed in a statement released by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Wednesday.

Speaking during the inauguration, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, Provost of the College, described the elevation of the departments to faculty level as a landmark achievement.

“This new framework marks a significant milestone for the institution and the nursing profession in Nigeria,” she said.

“The aim is to produce world-class professionals who can compete globally.”

She also revealed that plans are underway to commence degree-awarding programmes in partnership with the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, a move that would significantly enhance the college’s academic standing and student output.

The Pro-Chancellor of LAUTECH, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, delivered the keynote address, commending the restructuring as a groundbreaking reform in nursing education.

“This inauguration fills a long-standing gap in the structure of nursing education in Nigeria,” Omole said.

“We are committed to supporting the college as it moves toward becoming a degree-awarding institution.”

The move is expected to benefit both the institution and Nigeria’s broader healthcare system, especially as demand for specialized nursing roles continues to rise locally and globally.

The Provost emphasized that the various nursing tracks now housed under full faculties will enhance the college’s curriculum and training capacity, preparing students to meet international best practices in healthcare delivery.

This development follows a string of recent upgrades under the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration, including:

  •  Approval of 116 new academic staff and four principal officers
  • Development of an online clearance system for students
  •  Full accreditation granted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in late 2024
