Minister Dingyadi advances tripartite talks to resolve NUPENG Dangote dispute, aiming to prevent nationwide strike and economic disruption

The NUPENG Dangote dispute took a significant turn on Monday as Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, moved forward a crucial tripartite conciliation meeting originally set for 3 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Despite the rescheduling, NUPENG leaders and other key stakeholders were still en route from Lagos to Abuja by the new meeting time, delaying the start of discussions.

An official from the Ministry told Vanguard the meeting would commence only once all parties arrived.

The urgency behind the rescheduling remains unclear. However, earlier reports from PUNCH Online revealed the meeting’s goal: to halt a nationwide industrial strike threatened by NUPENG against the Dangote Group, which could potentially damage Nigeria’s already fragile economy.

NUPENG has leveled serious allegations against Dangote and its affiliates, accusing the refinery of employing “crude and dangerous anti-union practices” and pursuing a monopolistic agenda.

The union claims the company offers some of the lowest wages in the petroleum sector and excludes drivers of imported CNG trucks from union membership.

According to NUPENG, these conditions breach Section 40 of Nigeria’s Constitution, the Labour Act, and International Labour Organisation conventions protecting freedom of association.

The outcome of the NUPENG Dangote dispute meeting remains highly anticipated, with many hoping it will avert an industrial showdown and promote better labour relations in the sector.
