RenewHER women’s health initiative launched by Tinubu to fight maternal mortality and promote women’s well-being across Nigeria

RenewHER women’s health initiative has been officially launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rates and improve women’s overall health outcomes nationwide.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at a Gala and Awards ceremony held Thursday night at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu described RenewHER as “a national priority” and “an answer to one of the nation’s most critical prayers.”

“There is no greater test of a nation’s character than the care it extends to its women,” the President said. “Maternal health is the heartbeat of every family, the compass of social stability, and the truest index of national welfare.”

The RenewHER women’s health initiative is designed as a multi-sectoral collaboration to bring maternal and adolescent health issues to the forefront of national planning.

A new Presidential Focal Office on Women’s Health will coordinate efforts between the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women Affairs, Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, and other partners.

As part of the initiative, Tinubu announced the creation of a National Women’s Health Digital Hub powered by artificial intelligence.

This hub will provide geo-targeted messaging on preventive care, maternal survival, and reproductive health—linking public health with entrepreneurship and national prosperity.

The AI-powered hub will offer trusted information to women and families while supporting healthcare workforce development.

According to the Presidency, this marks a significant digital advancement in Nigeria’s public health communication strategy.

“Maternal mortality is a shame against which we must all rally,” Tinubu declared, adding that RenewHER complements ongoing projects like the MAMII initiative and international development frameworks.

Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, pledged the full backing of governors’ wives across the federation.

She praised the initiative as a powerful blend of health advocacy and women’s empowerment, saying it reflects Tinubu’s wider vision for national renewal.

UN Women’s Nigeria Country Representative, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, described RenewHER as a “bold step”and a turning point for women’s healthcare policy in Nigeria.

She commended the government for elevating women’s health to the highest policy level and affirmed continued UN support to expand access for women and girls.

Dr. Adanna Steinacker, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, urged stakeholders to unite behind the initiative.

She called RenewHER “a movement to renew Nigeria’s future”, made possible by Tinubu’s directive to prioritise women’s well-being.

The RenewHER women’s health initiative stands as a powerful commitment to social equity, aiming to reduce preventable maternal deaths and boost health systems through digital innovation, policy leadership, and grassroots partnerships.
