Kwara revitalises 83 primary healthcare centres

Kwara healthcare revitalisation: Governor AbdulRazaq commissions 83 upgraded primary healthcare centres, reaching over 1.6 million children with Vitamin A

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with World Bank-supported projects, has rejuvenated 83 primary healthcare facilities across the state, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Ilorin, AbdulRazaq said the state has reached over 1.6 million children with Vitamin A, a significant increase from just over 100,000 in 2020. He added that Kwara now boasts one of the lowest under-five mortality rates in Nigeria.

“This achievement boldly reflects our commitment to providing quality healthcare to every citizen, regardless of location,” the governor said.

“Pregnant women will no longer need to travel long distances for antenatal care and safe delivery services. Children will receive timely immunisations, and our youth and elderly will access reproductive and chronic care services closer to home.”

The governor credited the progress to funding from the state government, the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project, the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, and Leadership Challenge Funds won by the state.

He noted that partnerships with UNICEF and other stakeholders, alongside prompt counterpart funding, were crucial to the success of the initiative.

Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Prof. Nusirat Elelu, highlighted the impact of the revitalisation, stating that over 722,000 outpatients have visited the facilities compared to just 8,020 in 2020.

She added that more than 500,000 pregnant women have received haematinics, compared with 30,000 deliveries in 2020.

“These figures represent lives transformed. Every mother, child, and family now accessing care through these revitalised facilities is a testament to what strategic partnership and shared vision can achieve,” she said.

AbdulRazaq emphasised that the improvements are part of a broader commitment to expanding coverage, sustaining gains, and enhancing the welfare of the state’s health workforce.
