Tobi Amusan wins silver at the World Championships in Tokyo, earning \$55,000 in prize money and bonuses after a stunning 100m hurdles race

The 28-year-old Nigerian, who famously stormed to gold and a world record in Eugene 2022, once again proved her consistency at the elite level.

Amusan clocked 12.29 seconds to finish second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stunned the field with a new national record of 12.24s to claim gold.

American Grace Stark earned bronze in 12.34s, while her compatriot Masai Russell missed the podium after hitting several hurdles, finishing fourth in 12.44s.

For her second-place finish, Amusan pockets \$35,000 from World Athletics, in line with the official prize structure.

She also received an additional \$20,000 silver bonus from Hiracer, Nigeria’s official kit supplier, bringing her total earnings to \$55,000 (₦82,577,300).

The Nigerian star had earlier breezed through her semi-final in 12.36s, entering the final as one of the favourites.

Although unable to repeat her 2022 golden feat, the silver medal represents Nigeria’s 12th medal in the history of the World Championships and further cements Amusan’s place as one of the nation’s greatest athletes.

The Tokyo final was one of the most competitive in recent memory, with Kambundji producing the race of her life to eclipse a world-class field.

Her victory signalled the arrival of a new force in global sprint hurdling, while Amusan’s performance reaffirmed her status among the sport’s elite.

While she may not have defended her world title, Amusan’s medal-winning consistency continues to inspire millions in Nigeria and beyond, ensuring her name remains etched among the legends of athletics.
